Book Review of Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
Little Women is an excellent and easy-to-read classic book that has delighted generations of readers. It’s the classic Civil War-era story of four very different, but very creative, sisters on their home front with their endearing mother, anticipating their father’s homecoming from the War.ย
Jo: a headstrong and ambitious writer;
Beth: a quiet music lover;
Meg: a nurturing and feminine caretaker; and
Amy: a youthful and spirited artist.
Their mother fosters a creative childhood at home, including a friendship with a local boy, Laurie.ย The children come of age amidst a backdrop of both adventures and hardships.
Besides the above, I don’t like to say too much about the plot of this book because I think it’s best experienced by the reader upon reading the original words. I really do think that’s all you need to know going in.
Little Women is one classic that delivers for readers of all ages and genders. Despite being an older classic, it’s so easy to read, heartwarming, and emotional at truly any age. This is not a classic that should intimate you! It’s one that you indulge in with a cozy blanket and a hot beverage to comfort you.
In my personal opinion, it should be read in schools just as avidly as more “masculine” books like Huck Finn. Why? Each sister comes across as distinctly unique, and the book shines a light on how different young women can become themselves with the support of loved ones — a lesson that holds true today.
Little Women by Louisa May Alcott has stood the test of time, and it is one of my absolute favorite books. It’s a “bucket list” book everyone should read at some time in his or her lifetime of reading.
